What Is a Riptide? | Is It the Same as a Rip Current?

What is a Riptide

Riptide and rip currents — are two terms that are often used interchangeably by media and beachgoers alike. Although both of them are powerful and dangerous phenomena that lurk beneath the water’s surface, these two are not quite the same thing. A riptide is a strong flow of water within enclosed tidal areas such as harbors and estuaries. It’s caused by a tide that pulls water through an inlet along a lagoon or barrier beach wherein the water flows out to the sea. Oftentimes, people don’t know how severe a riptide is until they get swept away by it hundreds of meters away from the shore.  In this post, you’ll learn about the dangers of riptide and rip currents, as well as their differences. We’ll also share with you some safety precautions you can do to avoid being carried away by these death traps.  What is a riptide? In June 2021, news broke about a father and child who died after being swept away by a riptide in Apollo Beach Nature Preserve. The man who rescued them was also reported to be missing. Sadly, the rescuers said that it’s unlikely he’ll be found alive.  The thing about riptides is that they can’t be seen with the naked eye. You won’t be able to feel anything while you’re being swept away. You’ll look back at the beach and see that you’re already miles away from the shore — and that’s when the panic starts to kick in.  Before we discuss more of the risks, you must first understand how riptides are formed.  Because of certain confusion with the terms, a riptide is often mistaken as the same as rip currents; however, the former is caused by tidal movements, as opposed to the latter which is caused by wave action. Unlike rip currents, riptide is also predictable as it is influenced by the rise and fall of the water level in the ocean.  Riptide is a powerful current that often takes place in coastal regions, but it can also happen in constricted areas such as bays, large lakes, and lagoons. Even if there are no waves, riptides can occur, especially if they’re next to man-made structures like piers and jetties.  Coastal engineers refer to riptide as flood jets and tidal jets because of the large amounts of sand it carries. Later on, this sand will form sandbars under the ocean and in the inlet’s channels.  Riptide is also characterized by strong offshore currents. If the water flow is stabilized, the water that flows to the ocean is more consistent. The more constricted the flow is, the stronger the riptide will be. This increases the risk of being pulled a thousand feet offshore by the falling tides. When there’s a riptide, no boats sail out because the waters could be life-threatening. Not even the best kinds of swimmers will be able to swim against these currents. That’s why local governments put up signs of warnings in danger zones, but sadly, some people disregard these signs.  The riptide in Shinnecock Inlet in New York that extends more than 980 ft (300 meters) offshore is an example of a current you don’t want to be swept away in. Another dangerous place where riptides occur is Australia. Every year, more than 20 people die here because of these dangerous currents. That’s more than the combined total of the victims of other natural calamities such as cyclones and floods in this country.  How to Survive a Riptide The natural reaction when you get pulled away by a riptide is to get overwhelmed by panic and fatigue. However, not knowing what to do in this kind of situation may end up in death. In the worst-case scenario that the waters take you offshore, you must remember these things to avoid drowning. To escape and survive the strong currents generated by rip currents, the best thing you can do is to stay afloat as much as you can and keep your head above the water. Let your body flow in the direction where the current is going.  It’s better to be swept away far from the shore and live than die trying to swim against it. Wave for help and hope that a lifeguard or a boat will see you. Raise one arm or yell if you can.  It’s paramount that you stay calm. Panicking and paddling against the current will only cause you to lose energy. Control your breathing.  Refrain from thinking negative thoughts and instead focus on facts. Remember, riptide is a natural hazard, but its currents won’t pull you underwater, unlike undertows.  What are rip currents? Warning signs are useless if you don’t know how to differentiate riptides from rip currents, but since news and some people use these terms in similar ways, things can really get confusing.  Rip currents are strong, narrow currents that are often found near beaches. They are formed when the waves that are breaking to the shore pile along the beach, then move directly away from the shore by cutting through the breaking waves.  They are formed when there’s a depression in the sand that creates a channel underneath where the water flows back out to the ocean. Take a look at the video below to see what rip currents look like when seen from an elevated place.  A rip current doesn’t look like what it seems. By observing it from above the water’s surface, a rip current is seen as a darker and calm spot. This is why a lot of swimmers mistake it as the safest area to swim in, when in fact it’s the most dangerous. According to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), rip currents kill 100 people every year. With a speed that can reach up to 8 meters per second, these currents can take you 100 meters away from the shore in just a manner of minutes.  The location of a rip current is unpredictable, which further adds to its long list of dangers. … Read more

Top 5 Best E-Bikes for Surfing | The Ultimate Guide

Best E-Bikes for Surfing

Have you tried pedaling up a hill while carrying a longboard on your arm? Not the easiest thing in the world! So what if we tell you that there’s a motorized bike that can do half of the work so you can save your energy and spend it more on surfing instead?  E-bikes or electronic bikes have been around for several years; however, only affluent surfers were able to buy them back then. Now that they’re gaining popularity, more affordable options are available in the market to make them accessible to everyone.  From WSL pros to kooks, surfers of all skill levels are now seen sporting e-bikes at the beach because they’re convenient to use. These e-bikes allow you to pedal your way to the beach for quick spotting and sessions. Much better, they can be parked practically anywhere!  If you’re eyeing purchasing your own e-bike for surfing, you’re on the right track. This guide contains everything you need to know about them, including a list of our top 5 best picks. What are e-bikes? Beaches and hard-to-reach surfing spots become more accessible, thanks to the invention of e-bikes or bicycles that use electric motors to assist with pedaling.  Electronic bikes are battery-powered motors that give the experience of riding a beach cruiser bike but with added boost because of their pedal and throttle systems. Unlike motorcycles, however, e-bikes’ motors only assist instead of being a full-blow motorized vehicle. They take some of the pressure off your legs and help you when going uphill or riding through beach sand. Years ago, e-bikes were bulky and heavy because of the big batteries that they come with. This means you have to be physically fit to ride one, and unlike today’s e-bikes wherein the power can last for hours, the previous ones had limited battery life.  Those days are long gone. Today, e-bikes are made lighter with smaller batteries that have extended battery life. Now, you don’t have to strain your calves pedaling uphill with a heavy bike when your battery runs out at the most unfortunate time. Modern e-bikes also have cheaper options — with the low-end models’ prices starting from $1500.  Now, decent electronic bikes have a ballpark price of $3,000. These models have power and features that will provide you with just enough convenience and luxury. Meanwhile, higher-end electronic bikes with smart controls and features like automatic LED lights, LCD, and mounted racks are priced at $4,000 to $15,000.  You may be thinking how the heck these e-bikes could get so expensive, but it’s helpful to think of them as vehicles, and not simply as bicycles. E-bikes can carry up to 300 pounds of weight load, and it’s able to sustain speeds that can reach 28 mph. Aside from that, being a specialist hobby also contributes to these bikes’ astounding price tag.  Top 5 Best E-Bikes for Surfing For this comprehensive guide, we’ve listed 5 electronic bikes from different categories to help you find which one’s best for you. Here is their lineup at a glance.  Super 73 S2 — Our Top Pick Rad Power Bikes Radrunner 1 — Best Budget Cannondale Tesoro Neo X 3 — Best High-End Electric Bike Company Model X — Most Customizable Juiced Bikes Hyperscorpion — Fastest E-Bike 1: Super73 S2 — Our Top Pick Specifications: Price: $2,695 Weight: 73 lbs. Weight capacity: 325 lbs. Battery: 960 Wh Top Speed: 30 mph Classification: 3 (Pedal-assist and Throttle) Based in Orange County, California, Super73 has been around since 2016. Since then, this company has built good brand recognition because of its strong customer base which consists of celebrities and athletes. But marketing aside, perhaps everyone will agree that the Super73 is the most recognizable on the beach because of the flashy logos scattered all over their bikes’ bodies, tire treads, seats, and even in the nuts.  Super 73 may not have the most subtle advertising you’ve seen, but thankfully, their bike’s stylish silhouettes and powerful performance make up for their tackiness. If you’re a surfer who lives miles away from the beach and needs an e-bike for convenient wave spotting and surfing come-and-go, we recommend any of the Super73’s electronic bikes.  For this lineup, we’ve chosen the S2 from Super 73’s mid-range S-series. It’s a sport-cruiser e-bike that can operate in all three different classifications. That said, the S2 is a street-legal bike that requires no license, registration, or insurance. The S2 is a high-performance electronic bike that has a 615 Wh battery and a 1350-watt motor.  Speed is this e-bike’s greatest strength, as it can reach a maximum speed of 28 to 30 mph in non-road situations. However, if riding uphill, its acceleration is a bit slow and it will need some pedaling assistance before it reaches its top speed.  For its body, the S2 is constructed with an aluminum-grade alloy frame. Also, this electronic bike includes BDGR tires —the first-ever tires that combine bicycle and motor tires to improve traction, reduce noise, and provide stability in off-road conditions. Some electronic bikes can only accommodate lone riders, but the S2 gives you the option of accommodating another small passenger with its extendable seat. What we dislike is even if this e-bike gives a motorcycle-like riding experience, sitting on its seat can hurt especially during long rides.  Finally, the S2 also features smart controls such as its integrated electronic suite that’s compatible with iOS and Android and can be accessed through the Super73 app. It’s not the most advanced technology out there, but it does its job really well.  2: Rad Power Bikes Radrunner 1 — Best Budget Specifications:  Price: $1,299 Weight: 65 lbs. Weight capacity: 300 lbs. Battery: 672 Wh Top Speed: 20 mph Classification: 2 (Pedal and throttle assist) When it comes to entry-level utility electronic bikes, you can’t go wrong with Rad Power Bikes — North America’s largest e-bike brand. This Seattle-based company is slowly gaining recognition because of its affordable e-bikes fit for everyday use. Their electronic bikes are so functional, … Read more

Best Swim Flippers for Kids

Kids learning how to swim also learn life skills that aren’t limited to the pool or sea. Swimming promotes teamwork, harbors trust in others and strengthen bonds. Every time a child celebrates their swimming progress and success, they’ll gain a confidence boost within themselves that stretches into other aspects of their lives. In addition, research has shown that there are many great lifelong benefits to childhood swimming: Improved socialization among different peers Improved cognitive behavior Enhanced gross motor skill development and coordination Lead greater happiness, health, and development of a child’s personality If your child hasn’t organically developed the ability to tread water properly, learning how to kick with swim flippers is a great way for them to get more comfortable with it. Top 12 Best Swim Flippers for Kids The younger the kid, the more challenging it is to learn how to kick with a fin. A great tip is to encourage pointed toes and straighten legs when paddling. Of course, the legs aren’t totally straight for the entire kick. There is a little bend at the knee when first starting the kick, which then finishes straight. These details are a bit too complicated to explain to a child. That’s why it’s best to encourage them to have their legs straight. They’ll eventually get it by instinct. There is a lot of kid swim flippers to choose from. We narrowed it down to twelve, so you don’t have to. Amberbaby Kid Swim Flippers — Our Top Pick WPYYI Swim Flippers — Best High End A Point Diving Swim Flippers — Best Budget LKXSWZQ Kid Swim Flippers Carols Kid Swim Flippers CZYPF Kid Swim Flippers Olaffi Kid Swim Flippers Comfecto Kid Swim Flippers Finis Kid Swim Flippers Amazqi Kid Swim Flippers Capas Kid Swim Flippers Cressi Kid Swim Flippers 1. This is cost-effective since your kids will not outgrow their fins for a few years. Kids can easily put on and remove the fins with its Quick and Easy technology heel straps with large thumb loops for adjustment ease. Built with high-quality custom material, the Amberbaby fins offer a soft foot pocket and barefoot flexibility. The flippers are designed to also be worn with fin socks or dive booties which help protect diver’s feet from cold and blisters.  Amberbaby also boasts a compact design without compromising speed that’s ideal for packing during travels. 2. WPYYI Swim Flippers — Best High End Specifications: Heel type: Open heel Fin type: Paddle fin Fin size: Longfin WPYYI fins provide both tightness and comfort at the same time, which is usually a problem for kids’ swim flippers. This is possible due to two things: its anti-slip adjustable strap technology and superior construction.  The strap allows adjustment for proper tightness for easy wear and removal of the fins. The construction is tough and flexible, that’s neither too hard nor too soft. The fins also come with dual-channel drain hole outlets to reduce water resistance, giving the diver free action underwater. 3. A Point Diving Swim Flippers — Best Budget Specifications: Heel type: Close heel Fin type: Paddle fin Fin size: Shortfin A Point Diving fins are not only the cheapest on this list, but they are carefully designed to compete against high-end kids’ swim flippers. The soft areas of the fins are made of high-quality thermoplastic rubber and the hard areas are polypropylene material. This mix results in a durable but lightweight set that provides excellent performance underwater without tiring your feet as fast. The flexible foot pocket automatically adjusts its shape to give a perfect fit. Perfect for kids with underdeveloped motor skills to wear the fins easily. A common problem for cheap fins is slippage, especially when walking around the beach. A Point Diving fixes this problem with its non-slip design, and drain holes add breathability and comfort with protection from slippage. 4. LKXSWZQ Kid Swim Flippers Specifications: Heel type: Close heel Fin type: Paddle fin Fin size: Longfin LKXSWZQ fins are made of a custom mix of thermoplastic elastomer and polypropylene material that gives it high flexibility without the risk of tearing.  The non-slip convex bottom design increases friction to increase the efficiency of every kick. Being more efficient results in more power, increasing the distance per kick. The fin’s palm frame concentrates water pressure providing better stability underwater. Coupled with its dual channel draining to reduce water resistance, divers gain more freedom of movement underwater and improved diving swimming speed. 5. Carols Kid Swim Flippers Specifications: Heel type: Open heel Fin type: Paddle fin Fin size: Shortfin Carols claim that their fins are bent 1,500 times to check for deformation and cracking. Only high-quality construction materials can survive that kind of stress test. The fins use adjustable side buckles to get the correct tightness for the diver’s feet. They’re made of high-quality polypropylene and thermoplastic rubber that’s non-toxic and wear-resistant.  The bottom of each fin adopts a pattern design that adds better friction with the ground, providing more safety against skidding. Additionally, they’re designed with drainage holes that reduce water resistance by adding a speed perk kick. 6. CZYPF Kid Swim Flippers Specifications: Heel type: Close heel Fin type: Paddle fin Fin size: Shortfin CZYPF fins have a closed-heel design.
